We wake up the next morning to chocolate icing in our hair and the sobering realization that Ginnyâs face doesnât look any different than it did the night before.
âI donât get it.â She peers closer to the mirror to inspect her reflection. âLast night I thought I was getting better.â
So did I. âDo you want me to take you back to the urgent-care clinic?â
âThereâs no time. The talent prelims start at three oâclock.â She pulls a face. âAnd, well . . .â
I finish for her. âI have no talent.â
Ginny holds up her hands. âYou said it. Not me.â
âThereâs got to be something I can do. Iâm not auditioning for the Metropolitan Opera. Itâs a beauty pageant.â
Ginny clears her throat. âScholarship competition.â
I hold up a hand. âDonât start. Pleaseâ
Not when I somehow have to learn ventriloquism or how to dance the hula or sing a Bible hymn while signing it in ASL in a mere handful of hours.
I gasp, struck with sudden inspiration. âWhat about a dramatic reading?â
Iâve been reading since I was four years old. Itâs my thing. I wouldnât even need to prepare. Off the top of my head, I can recite half a dozen monologues, from Romeo and Juliet to Macbeth to Hamlet.
I swallow.
The thought of Hamlet sends my heart tumbling. Iâve been doing my best to push Gray Beckham and his altruistic charms from my mind altogether. Itâs been hard. So. Very. Hard.
But I canât deal with that humiliating situation at the moment. There are more pressing matters at hand. Besides, Iâve been taking Buttercup outside as often as I possibly can without causing suspicion, and I havenât seen Gray or his cute little dog at all. Itâs as if theyâve packed up and moved out of the Huntington altogether.
Or more likely, Gray is going to great lengths to avoid me.
âA dramatic reading? Youâre joking, right?â Ginny cringes. The gesture is so exaggerated that she looks more like an emoji than an actual person.
âWhy do I get the feeling you think thatâs a bad idea?â
âBecause it is. Contestants only do dramatic readings when theyâre not capable of doing anything else. As far as talent goes, itâs a last resort.â She eyes me up and down. âDead last.â
Her comment doesnât even bother me. Itâs amazing how accustomed Iâve become to being insulted, all for the sake of a crown.
âWhat were you planning on doing for talent?â
Ginny has toyed with contemporary dance, traditional flamenco, and classical flute, among other talents. Unlike me, Ginny is blessed in the charisma department. She can get away with pretty much anything onstage.
âI was going to twirl,â she says.
This is unexpected. To my knowledge, her long list of competitive talent numbers has never included baton. âI didnât realize you knew how to do that.â
âIâve been taking lessons for the past six months.â Her gaze flits to the picture of our mother, still propped up in a place of honor on Ginnyâs nightstand. âItâs what Mom did when she won.â
âThatâs nice. Itâs really sweet, sis.â I take a deep breath.
